When your feet perform optimally they will flex and splay (sort of like a spring) in order to expel as much of the force that we are applying to it?

Shoes tend to minimise the natural movement which is why such a high number of people have so many problems with their feet and how then certain types of orthotics can help boost performance and decrease injuries.
It’s alarming that 3 per cent of people in the US are born with foot issues, yet 85 per cent have problems throughout their lifetime.
So does the use of an orthotic increase comfort, decrease injury and improve your performance?

A measure of a high-quality orthotic is that it is designed to help your feet to move optimally.
That is, it should help your feet flex and splay as nature intended in order to expel the force that is being applied to it, for example when you run, put pressure on it or play sports.
Basic insoles attempt to absorb the force by being made out of rubbery and spongy type materials. This approach tends to cause instability, may provide temporary relief from symptoms but does not address the cause of the problem.
Why do we need to expel the force?
Well, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If the force being applied to the foot is not expelled then it must be returned to point of origin. Therefore, the more force we can push out the bottom of our feet, the less it gets reverberated back up into your body.
The amount of force applied through the foot is also the way we move forward.
So the more force and stress we apply through our feet either means:
- Faster movement forward (or higher if you are jumping)
- Or if we’re not trying to motor along too fast, then it means less energy to go forward at a slower pace.
There are all sorts of angles that relate to Newton’s Second Law of Motion, but in short, the foot is designed to act like a spring.
The benefits of orthotics for performance and reducing injury:
- Orthotics, like G8s, can assist the foot in this movement and this will have numerous benefits from more forward momentum to less injuries from reverberated force going back up the body.
For example, force on your feet will also mean the foot is suffering stress. This can result in plantar fasciitis, metatarsal stress fractures, severs syndrome etc. Using a G8 orthotic reduces the direct load stress to the tissues in that area.
- I recently treated a 14 year old boy who played representative soccer. He suffered from severe heel pain that had been diagnosed as severs disease. Severs occurs when there is stress and inflammation in the Achilles tendon where it attaches to the heel. This is a common injury in all football codes and can occur at any age. Within 2 weeks he was back to full training and playing after wearing G8’s and adjusting them accordingly.
- A good orthotic will help with any unusual biomechanics of your feet that are hindering your performance and setting you up for serious injury in the future. Their role is to enhance the correct the mechanics of the foot.
- That in turn helps with lower limb alignment too. If your feet are misaligned, then it can throw out your legs, hips, back and so on wreaking havoc on your entire body.
